Tsunami Victims Need More Sarongs And Veils By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri Begawan, 15 January 2005 - Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (Yayasan SHHB) has called for donations of "batik" or "pelikat" sarongs or waist-clothes as well as "telekung" or praying veils for Muslim women to help the tsunami victims in Aceh to perform the Hari Raya Aidil Adha prayers this January 21.
The public can donate the sarongs and praying veils direct to the collection point at the Yayasan SHHB Complex in the capital by today. The items will be sent to Aceh on Monday.
The call was made by Yayasan SHHB after it had received a feedback on the shortage of such materials from the mercy mission of Brunei Darussalam stationed in Aceh.
Meanwhile, the association of Indonesian citizens in Brunei Darussalam, Kerabat Nusantara, which has been actively organising tsunami fundraising activities for Aceh announced forthcoming events to collect donations for the unfortunate victims of the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Aceh.
A multi-activity event will be held tomorrow at the Scouts Building in Beribi to collect funds for the tsunami victims in Aceh, said Sumantri Endang of Kerabat Nusantara.
According to Sumantri, the event entitled "Compassionate Kerabat Nusantara in Helping Tsunami Victims of Aceh" will feature a bazaar, talks and an auction held by members of the Indonesian community in Brunei.
The event will run from 9am until noon. "The bazaar will be launched by the guest-of-honour, BapakYusbar Djamil, the Indonesian Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam," said Sumantri.
"Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend the charity event."
He said Kerabat Nusantara with the cooperation of Sheraton Utama Hotel will also organise a charity dinner for tsunami victims in Aceh on January 29 at the Mutiara Ballroom, Sheraton Utama Hotel from 7.00pm to 10.30pm.
"The events that have been planned for the night include a Children's Aceh Dance performance, a talk on the earthquakes and tsunamis by Agus Djamil as well as the serving of Aceh food.
"Tickets for the event are priced at B$55 and all the proceeds will go to the tsunami victims in Aceh," said Surnantri.
Guest-of-honour at the event will be Bapak Yusbar Djamil, the Indonesian Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam.
Another activity that is currently being planned is an exhibition of paintings by seven top Indonesian painters where 100 per cent of the proceeds will also go towards the tsunami victims of Aceh.
"The date and location of the exhibition will be announced later," he said.
Meanwhile, last Thursday evening, Kerabat Nusantara and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) held a talk on earthquakes and tsunamis by Agus Djamil at the university's Senate Room, Chancellor Hall. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
